Kamm, Birgit, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil.

Birgit Kamm is both member of the board and scientific director of biopos e.V. (Research Institute of Bioactive Polymer Systems, Teltow-Seehof) since 1998. She founded the Green Biorefinery Association Berlin-Brandenburg in 1997 and and co-founded the biorefinery.de gmbh, Potsdam (Research, Development and Transfer Company) in 2001. Dr. Kamm is member of several scientific associations, e.g. German Chemists Society, Organic Chemistry Division and of American Chemical Society, Green Chemistry and Engineering Subdivision.

Educated at the Technical University of Merseburg, where she earned her diploma (1986), she was research associate at the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, where she earned her doctoral degree (1991). She was received grant from the German Federal Foundation of Environment from 1997 to 2001. In the July of year 2005 she has finished her habilitation (venia legendi: Organic Chemistry) at the University of Potsdam. In the December of year 2005 she was appointed to Professor of Biorefinery Technology at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus.

Her main interests in research and development are the Industrial Biorefinery Systems and biobased product family trees. In this fields her especial research interests are the Bioorganic Syntheses, in particular the syntheses of bioactive substances and biodegradable materials based on lactic acid, amino acids and betaines (e.g. carnitine). Biological raw materials, in particular the utilization of green biomass from a sustainable regional land utilization and lignocellulosic biomass are objects of investigation. Dr. Kamm is teached ‘Chemistry of Renewable Resources’ at the University of Potsdam, ‘Biobased Industrial Products and Biorefinery Systems’ at the Technical University of Cottbus, ‘Materials from Renewable Resources’ at the University of Applied Science Dresden and she has given scientific lectures in the mostly European countries as well as in the U.S.A. and Iceland.

She is author of about forty articles on chemistry, biotechnology and biorefinery as well as biobased products. In 1997 she has edited the book ’Die Grüne Bioraffinerie’ and 2006 the book ‘Biorefineries-Industrial Processes and Products’ (Wiley-VCH). Dr. Kamm hold about 12 patents.
